Product Description

Honeywell M7294Q1007 | Modutrol IV Non-Spring Return Actuator Motor — 300 lb-in / 120VAC / 4–20mA / 60s / NEMA 3 / Dual Shaft

300 lb-in of Torque, 4–20mA Precision Control

The Honeywell M7294Q1007 is the 300 lb-in non-spring return variant from the Series 72 Modutrol IV actuator motor family — the high-torque member of the Series 72 range, designed for demanding damper and valve applications where significant mechanical resistance must be overcome and precise proportional positioning is required.

The Modutrol IV actuator accepts a 4–20mA current signal from an electronic controller and positions the damper or valve at any point between fully open and fully closed, proportional to the signal value. At 4mA the actuator drives to one end of its travel; at 20mA it drives to the other; intermediate current values position the shaft at the corresponding proportional angle. The adjustable zero and span allow the signal range to be calibrated to match the controller's output and the valve or damper's physical requirements — the start and end positions of the stroke can be independently adjusted to achieve the correct response for the application.

As a non-spring return motor, the M7294Q1007 holds its last commanded position when power is interrupted — the output shaft does not automatically move to a safe position. This is the correct selection for applications where the damper or valve must maintain its last position during a power interruption — for example, in a supply air system where the valve closing on power loss would interrupt critical airflow. For applications where the actuator must move to a defined safe position (fully open or fully closed) on power loss, the spring return variants of the Series 72 are specified.

The integral junction box provides NEMA 3 weather protection when the motor is mounted in the upright position — rain resistance and solid object protection for outdoor or semi-exposed HVAC equipment installations. A factory-installed transformer converts the 120VAC supply to the 24VAC that the motor and its control circuitry operate from internally.

Adjustable Stroke and Zero/Span — Commissioning Flexibility

The M7294Q1007 provides three adjustable parameters that allow precise commissioning to match the specific damper or valve installation:

Stroke adjustment (90–160°): Sets the total angular travel of the output shaft. Match to the damper or valve's mechanical travel requirement.

Zero (start) adjustment: Sets the shaft position at the 4mA (start of signal range) command — aligns the physical open or closed position to the signal zero.

Span adjustment: Sets the shaft position at the 20mA (full scale) command — ensures full valve or damper travel corresponds to the full 4–20mA signal range.

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between the M7294Q1007 and the M7284 series Modutrol IV motors?

The M7294 series and M7284 series are both non-spring return Modutrol IV motors. The M7284 series operates directly from 24VAC without an internal transformer; the M7294 series includes a factory-installed step-down transformer for direct 120VAC connection. The M7294Q1007 specifically takes 120VAC input and converts it internally to 24VAC for the motor and control electronics. For 24VAC installations, the M7284 equivalent is specified.

Q2: Can the M7294Q1007 be used to control a valve to normally open position on power failure?

As a non-spring return motor, the M7294Q1007 holds its last position on power loss — it cannot automatically drive to open or closed. To achieve a normally open fail position, the spring return variants (M7282, M7285, M7286 series) are the correct selection. Spring return motors drive to a defined end-of-travel position when power is removed, through an integrated spring mechanism.

Q3: What HVAC and process applications is the 300 lb-in torque suited for?

300 lb-in of torque suits large commercial HVAC dampers (typically 50 ft² and above for medium-leakage dampers), large butterfly valves, pressure-independent control valves with high actuating force requirements, and process control applications with significant mechanical friction or flow-induced forces on the valve disc. For smaller dampers (below 25 ft²), lower-torque Modutrol IV variants reduce cost and may provide faster response.

Q4: Are the 2 auxiliary switches in the M7294Q1007 factory-configured at specific positions?

The auxiliary switch cams are field-adjustable. Each switch has a cam that can be set to activate the switch at any point in the motor's stroke range. This allows the auxiliary switches to signal remote positions to a controller, interlocking switch gear, or a building management system — for example, signalling when the damper is open beyond a minimum ventilation position or when the valve has reached full closed.

Q5: Where is the M7294Q1007 sourced?

Through Honeywell's building controls distribution network — HVAC/controls distributors, building automation suppliers, and the process controls aftermarket. The Modutrol IV Series 72 motor family is a long-established product line with wide distributor coverage. The M7294Q1007 is an active (non-discontinued) product and is stocked through standard Honeywell distribution channels.
