Overview

The 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 is the CBP2 (Communication Board PROFIBUS 2) module for the Siemens SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Motion Control series. This plug-in communication card adds PROFIBUS DP connectivity to SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Motion Control drives, enabling them to exchange drive commands, setpoints, and status data with PLCs, SCADA systems, and other automation devices on a PROFIBUS network.

The SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Motion Control (MC) was Siemens' high-performance drive platform for servo and vector control applications — used in CNC machine tools, robotics, high-speed production machinery, and any application requiring precise, dynamic control of servo and asynchronous motors. Communications is central to these applications.

A machining centre's multi-axis drive system needs the CNC controller to command each axis drive with precise speed and torque setpoints in every interpolation cycle. A robotics cell needs the robot controller to coordinate drive outputs across all joints simultaneously.

PROFIBUS DP, the fieldbus protocol implemented by the CBP2 module, delivers these commands with deterministic timing — each drive on the bus receives its setpoints and returns its status within a defined, repeatable cycle time.

This determinism is what separates PROFIBUS from general-purpose serial communications in motion control contexts, where timing variability translates directly to positioning errors.

CBP2 in SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Architecture

The SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES electronics box includes a main control board (the CUD or CUVC, depending on the drive variant) and option board slots.

The CBP2 module installs in one of these option slots — slots A through G, excluding slot F, for Z-option configurations G91 through G97. The slot position matters because it determines the drive's local bus connection point for the option board.

Once installed, the CBP2 module makes the drive visible as a PROFIBUS DP slave on the PROFIBUS network.

The master (typically a Siemens SIMATIC S7 PLC running a PROFIBUS DP master card) communicates with each drive by cyclically polling its setpoints and reading its actual values.

The CBP2 handles the PROFIBUS protocol framing, address decoding, and data exchange — presenting the drive controller with clean setpoint and status word data without the control software needing to manage the fieldbus protocol directly.

Setpoints communicated to the drive via CBP2 typically include: speed setpoint, torque setpoint or limit, control word (enable, direction, fault reset). Status words returned include: actual speed, actual current, status flags, and fault codes.

The exact process data structure is configurable through the drive's parameter system.

PROFIBUS DP — Protocol Characteristics

PROFIBUS DP (Decentralised Periphery) is a serial communication standard specifically developed for industrial automation. It operates at baud rates from 9.6 kbit/s to 12 Mbit/s. In motion control applications, PROFIBUS DP typically runs at 1.5 Mbit/s or 12 Mbit/s — the higher speed is required to achieve the short cycle times needed for coordinated multi-axis motion.

PROFIBUS uses a token-passing bus topology with an RS-485 physical layer.

The maximum cable length depends on baud rate — at 12 Mbit/s, maximum segment length without repeaters is 100 metres. Up to 126 nodes (including masters) can address each other on a PROFIBUS network, though practical installations rarely exceed 32 nodes per segment before repeaters are used.

The CBP2 designation in Siemens' terminology identifies the second generation of Communication Board PROFIBUS.

It replaced the earlier CBP1 and provides improved data exchange capability, faster response to master poll cycles, and broader compatibility with PROFIBUS DP masters from multiple vendors.

Note on Delivery Without Operating Instructions

The 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 is delivered without operating instructions. Documentation for the CBP2 module — installation procedure, parameter settings for PROFIBUS communication, and process data configuration — is available in the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Compendium and in separate CBP2 communication documentation.

These documents are required for correct commissioning and should be obtained before installation, particularly for sites without prior PROFIBUS integration experience.

FAQ

Q1: After installing the 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 CBP2 module and configuring the PROFIBUS address, the drive does not appear on the PROFIBUS network in the PLC's hardware configuration. What should be checked?

First verify the CBP2 is correctly seated in the drive's option slot — the slot must be A through G, not slot F. Check the PROFIBUS address set on the CBP2 (via the drive's parameter for bus address). Confirm the cable is connected to the correct PROFIBUS port on the CBP2 faceplate and that bus termination is applied at the physical ends of the PROFIBUS segment. Also verify the GSD file used in the PLC project matches the firmware version of the CBP2 module installed.

Q2: The SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Motion Control drive communicates via CBP2 but shows intermittent PROFIBUS timeout faults (F085 or similar) during high-speed production. The network cable and termination have been confirmed correct. What else should be examined?

Intermittent PROFIBUS timeout faults with confirmed cable and termination typically indicate a cycle time mismatch or excessive network bus load. Check that the PROFIBUS DP master's cycle time is configured to accommodate all slaves including the drive.

At 12 Mbit/s with multiple axes, cycle times of 1–2 ms are achievable; at lower baud rates, cycle times lengthen significantly.

Also verify that the watch dog time parameter in the CBP2 is set sufficiently longer than the master's actual cycle time to allow for occasional bus congestion without false timeouts.

Q3: The 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 is discontinued as of September 2020. Is PROFIBUS DP connectivity still available for new SINAMICS drive installations?

Yes — SINAMICS drives use the CBE20 (Communication Board Ethernet) for PROFINET connectivity, which is the strategic successor to PROFIBUS DP in modern Siemens automation.

For PROFIBUS DP specifically, the SINAMICS CB31 Communication Board provides PROFIBUS DP functionality in the current SINAMICS platform.

Facilities migrating from SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES to SINAMICS can replace PROFIBUS CBP2 communication with either CB31 (maintaining PROFIBUS) or with PROFINET if the control system also migrates to PROFINET-compatible PLCs.

Q4: The 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 is being replaced on a running production line. The drive needs to be restored to its exact previous PROFIBUS configuration. What parameters need to be documented or backed up before removal?

The key parameters to document are: the PROFIBUS station address, the process data configuration (which drive parameters map to which cyclic data words in the telegram structure), any parameter set for PROFIBUS cycle time monitoring, and the drive's setpoint/actual value telegram type selection.

These are typically P918.1 (PROFIBUS address), P922 (telegram type), and the related process data configuration parameters.

A full DriveMonitor parameter backup from the drive before removal captures all of these and provides the fastest path to restoring the replacement module to identical configuration.

Q5: Can the 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 CBP2 module be used in a SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Vector Control (VC) drive, or is it limited to the Motion Control (MC) variant?

The CBP2 module was available for both the SIMOVERT MASTERDRIVES Vector Control (VC) and Motion Control (MC) product lines, with different kit numbers for each.

The 6SE7090-0XX84-0FF5 with kit number 6SX7010-0FF05 is specifically designated for the Motion Control (MC) variant.

Vector Control drives use a different CBP2 variant. Installing an MC-designated CBP2 in a VC drive slot may result in incompatible process data structures or non-standard behaviour.

Confirm the specific CBP2 variant for the drive type in the drive's documentation before installation.
