Part Number: 6SL3040-1LA00-0AA0
Manufacturer: Siemens AG (Germany)
Product Type: Control Unit — CU310-2 DP
Product Family: SINAMICS S120
The 6SL3040-1LA00-0AA0 is the CU310-2 DP — SINAMICS S120's single-axis control unit for PROFIBUS DP networks. It ships without a CompactFlash card, which is ordered separately and holds the firmware and parameter set. Without a CF card installed, the unit cannot boot.
In the S120 architecture, the Control Unit is separate from the Motor Module and Line Module. The CU310-2 DP handles all the closed-loop processing for one servo or vector axis: it takes speed and torque setpoints over PROFIBUS DP from the plant PLC, runs the current, speed, and position control loops at high update rates, and sends PWM switching commands to the Motor Module. DRIVE-CLiQ carries the encoder data back from the motor and reads the electronic rating plate of every connected component, enabling automatic motor identification.
PROFIBUS DP is a well-established fieldbus in manufacturing. Many plants built in the 1990s and 2000s run on PROFIBUS infrastructure. The CU310-2 DP fits directly into those environments. For plants on PROFINET, the CU310-2 PN (a different part number) is the alternative.
The single DRIVE-CLiQ port connects to the Motor Module and to any motor with a native DRIVE-CLiQ interface — such as 1FK7 or 1FT7 motors with the DRIVE-CLiQ option. Motors with conventional encoder interfaces (resolver, sin/cos, HTL/TTL) need a Sensor Module Cabinet (SMC) for protocol conversion before connecting to DRIVE-CLiQ. The integrated DRIVE-CLiQ socket uses an M5 PE terminal for shield grounding — this connection must be made correctly for EMC compliance.
STARTER software (or TIA Portal with the S120 drive library) is the standard commissioning tool for the CU310-2 DP. A Basic Operator Panel (BOP20) can be snapped onto the unit for on-site access without a PC.
Parameters are stored on the CF card, not in the control unit. To replace the unit in a running system: transfer the CF card from the old unit to the replacement. If the firmware on the card is compatible with the replacement hardware, the drive restores its configuration without full re-commissioning. The PROFIBUS DP address is set by parameter (no DIP switches) and requires a power cycle to apply after any change.

Q1: The drive powers on but shows a CF card fault. What CF card is required?
The CF card for the CU310-2 series is a SINAMICS S120 firmware card ordered separately from Siemens. Choose the version matching the required firmware level. The card also stores the drive's parameter set — without it, the unit cannot initialise.
Q2: How is the PROFIBUS DP address set on the CU310-2 DP?
Via parameter through STARTER software or the BOP20 panel — there are no physical DIP switches. The new address takes effect after a power cycle.
Q3: Is an SMC encoder module needed when connecting a DRIVE-CLiQ motor?
No. Motors with a native DRIVE-CLiQ port (such as 1FK7 or 1FT7 with the DRIVE-CLiQ option) connect directly. The motor's nameplate data is read automatically. An SMC is only required when the motor uses a conventional encoder interface — resolver, sin/cos, or HTL/TTL.
Q4: What is the maximum PROFIBUS DP baud rate?
Up to 12 Mbit/s. The baud rate is detected and set automatically at startup — no manual configuration needed.
Q5: Replacing the CU310-2 DP in a running system — will parameters be lost?
Parameters are on the CF card. Transfer the card to the replacement unit. If the firmware version is compatible, the drive restores its previous configuration. Verify firmware compatibility before the swap.
