Siemens A5E00714562 | SINAMICS IGD2/R4 Inverter Power Block PC Board Assembly — Gate Driver with FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT Module

Part Number: A5E00714562

Manufacturer: Siemens AG — Germany

Product Type: IGD2/R4 Inverter Power Block PC Board Assembly (Gate Driver + IGBT Module)

Overview

The A5E00714562 is a SINAMICS Power Block PC board assembly in the IGD2/R4 series — the complete inverter power block repair assembly consisting of the second-generation IGBT Gate Driver (IGD2) board paired with the FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT power module.

This assembly was the repair-level replacement for the inverter section power block in SINAMICS G120, G120C, and G150 chassis-format drives.

It was discontinued on 1 April 2016, with A5E36717803 designated as its successor.

Sitting directly within the heart of the drive's power conversion stage, the A5E00714562 performs the core work of AC drive operation: it switches the DC bus voltage into the controlled three-phase output that runs the motor.

The IGD2 gate driver board generates the switching pulses; the FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT module does the actual high-power switching.

Together, they constitute the complete active power conversion assembly for the motor-side inverter section.

The FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT module is rated for higher current than the FS300R12KE3-S1 used in the sibling assembly A5E00714561.

This immediately identifies the A5E00714562 as the power block for SINAMICS drives in the higher power bracket — where motor loads demand the additional thermal and current headroom of the 450A-capable module.

The two assemblies serve different drive frame sizes and power ratings and are not interchangeable, despite sharing the same IGD2/R4 board format and the same physical architecture.

IGD2/R4 Architecture — Gate Driver and IGBT Together

The R4 suffix in the IGD2/R4 designation refers to the physical form factor — the fourth revision of the Siemens SINAMICS power block form factor, used in the mid-to-upper power range of the G120 and G150 chassis drive family.

Both the IGD2 gate driver board and the FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT module are physically integrated in the R4 assembly, which mounts as a single replaceable unit onto the drive's heatsink.

The IGD2 board performs three simultaneous functions: generating the PWM gate pulses from the Control Unit's switching commands, acquiring the motor phase current measurements from the built-in sensors, and implementing hardware-level overcurrent protection via desaturation detection on each of the six IGBT positions.

The FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT module handles the power side — switching currents up to 450A in the inverter bridge at DC bus voltages up to approximately 700V (for 480V AC input) or 930V (for 690V AC input, depending on the specific drive configuration).

The fact that the gate driver board and IGBT module are supplied as a matched assembly — rather than as separate items — reflects a design philosophy: the IGD2 board's gate resistors and driver characteristics are optimised specifically for the FS450R12KE3-S1 module.

Replacing only the IGBT module without also replacing the IGD2 board (or vice versa) risks a performance mismatch between gate drive characteristics and IGBT switching behaviour.

Discontinued Status and Successor

The A5E00714562 was discontinued on 1 April 2016. Its designated successor is A5E36717803, which incorporates the next-generation IGD2 gate driver board (part of the A5E36717xxx IGD2 series) paired with the compatible IGBT module for the same power level.

The A5E36717803 serves as a direct functional replacement in the same drive configurations.

For sites that still hold A5E00714562 assemblies in spare stock or need to source them, the industrial aftermarket remains the primary channel.

The successor part A5E36717803 is the recommended option for new repair orders where aftermarket A5E00714562 inventory is unavailable.

FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT Module

The FS450R12KE3-S1 is a full three-phase IGBT bridge in a single-package format, rated for 450A continuous collector current with a 1200V VCES rating. The 1200V device voltage provides adequate margin for 480V and 690V AC supply applications, where the DC bus operates at approximately 650V and 930V respectively.

The full-bridge construction simplifies assembly — all six IGBTs of the three-phase inverter are in a single module, reducing internal wiring complexity and thermal management points.

At 450A rated current, this module serves SINAMICS drive power ratings in the 200–280kW class (at 380–480V) — applications such as large pump drives, compressors, fans, and continuous process equipment where the motor loads are substantial and the drive runs at or near full current for extended periods.

FAQ

Q1: The SINAMICS G120 drive shows F30001 (overcurrent) at startup. The Control Unit tests confirm no software fault. Is the A5E00714562 power block likely to be the cause?

F30001 at startup on a confirmed-healthy CU can result from a failed IGBT (short-circuit or open-circuit fault) in the FS450R12KE3-S1, or from a gate driver fault in the IGD2 causing incorrect firing. Test the IGBT module for shorts across the main terminals before replacing the whole assembly.

A short across any IGBT position is confirmed by measuring very low resistance between the DC bus terminals with the gate signal removed.

Confirmed IGBT failure means full power block replacement — both the IGD2 board and the IGBT module, as supplied in the A5E00714562.

Q2: The A5E00714562 is discontinued. Can its successor A5E36717803 be installed as a direct drop-in replacement?

The A5E36717803 is the Siemens-designated successor and is designed as a functional replacement in the same drive configurations. For most installations, the physical mounting, DRIVE-CLiQ interface, and DC bus connections are compatible.

However, confirm the specific SINAMICS drive model, production state, and firmware version against Siemens' successor applicability documentation before installing.

Some early-production SINAMICS units may require firmware updates before a newer-generation power block is installed, as the drive's power block recognition function communicates with the IGD2 board via the drive's internal data bus.

Q3: After installing the A5E00714562 power block, the drive shows alarm A30031 (power unit overtemperature). The ambient temperature is within specifications. What is the most likely cause?

A30031 shortly after power block installation is almost always a thermal interface issue. The FS450R12KE3-S1 IGBT module must be installed on the heatsink with the correct thermal interface material (typically thermal compound or a phase-change pad) between the module's base plate and the heatsink surface.

If the thermal material was omitted, applied unevenly, or is the wrong type, the junction-to-heatsink thermal resistance increases significantly.

This causes IGBT junction temperature to rise faster under load than the heatsink body temperature, triggering the overtemperature alarm before the heatsink itself feels warm.

Re-check the thermal interface installation.

Q4: Two drives of the same SINAMICS G120 model are installed on the same production line. One has failed and needs the power block replaced. Can the power block be moved from the working drive as a temporary measure while a replacement is sourced?

This is technically possible — the power block from the working drive is compatible with the faulted drive. However, it transfers the downtime risk to the working drive, which is now operating without a tested spare.

It is generally better practice to run both drives in their original state and source the replacement part on an emergency basis from the aftermarket.

Moving the power block between drives is only advisable if the production consequence of both drives being down simultaneously is less severe than the consequence of one drive being down for the sourcing lead time.

Q5: The SINAMICS G150 drive had its A5E00714562 power block fail after a confirmed mains voltage surge event. Should the rest of the drive's electronics be inspected before the replacement block is installed?

Yes — a mains voltage surge sufficient to destroy the power block may also have stressed other components. Before installing the replacement power block, inspect the DC link capacitors for swelling or leakage (visual inspection) and measure the DC bus pre-charge circuit for correct function.

Check the Control Unit for fault codes stored before the failure event. Confirm the braking resistor (if fitted) and brake chopper circuit are intact.

Installing a new power block onto a drive with a stressed pre-charge circuit, damaged capacitors, or a compromised braking system risks re-damaging the new assembly.

A thorough incoming inspection of the remaining drive electronics takes far less time than sourcing a second replacement power block.
