Overview

The A16B-3200-0325 is the main CPU PCB for FANUC Series 18i-A and 180i-A CNC systems. It is the cornerstone board of the 18i / 180i Model A standalone control architecture — the central board onto which CPU processor cards, FSSB driver modules, graphics cards, memory modules, and other plug-in boards are mounted.

The complete standalone CNC control is built around this main PCB.

The 18i and 180i designations cover FANUC's mid-to-high-performance i-series CNC generation.

These controllers were designed for machining centres, turning centres, compound machine tools, and other multi-axis applications requiring a capable but compact control platform. The 18i-MA and 18i-TA sub-designations indicate machining centre and turning centre variants respectively.

The 180i designation covers the open CNC version of the same hardware platform, integrating PC functions alongside the CNC core.

This board is discontinued by FANUC. It is found in standalone system enclosures commonly identified by A02B-0266-Bxxx system unit part numbers, among others. The board is supplied without plug-in peripheral PCBs — each plug-in card is a separate component with its own part number.

Standalone Architecture

The A16B-3200-0325 is the main board for FANUC's standalone CNC configuration. In a standalone control, the CNC electronics are housed in a separate cabinet from the operator panel. The main PCB is the backplane of this control unit.

Plug-in boards for CPU processing, FSSB servo communication, graphics, and memory connect to the main PCB within the standalone enclosure.

This contrasts with FANUC's LCD-mounted design, where the main CPU board integrates into the operator panel assembly behind the display screen.

The standalone architecture gives more expansion flexibility — more plug-in slots accommodate a wider range of option boards — and is the configuration used for more complex machine tool applications with high option loading.

The A16B-3200-0325 is the Model A version of the 18i/180i main board.

A later Model B main board uses a different part number (A16B-3200-0421 and related). The two are not interchangeable — the plug-in board architecture and connector definitions differ between Model A and Model B.

Always confirm the model generation before sourcing a replacement.

18i / 180i Platform Context

The Series 18i-A was a capable mid-range CNC platform for its generation. It handled four to six axes effectively, supported a broad option set, and was deployed across a wide range of machine tool types manufactured in the 1990s and 2000s.

Many of these machines remain in active production today.

The 180i-A variant adds Open CNC functionality — a Windows-based PC environment running alongside the CNC kernel on the same hardware. This allowed machine builders to develop custom operator interfaces and data management applications.

The main PCB hardware is the same; the difference lies in the software and the additional PC hardware installed in the control rack.

Both the 18i-A and 180i-A rely on the A16B-3200-0325 as their main board. When this board fails, the entire control fails with it.

Replacement restores the control hardware to operational status, with the plug-in boards and software reloaded to complete the system.

Board Supplied Without Plug-In PCBs

The A16B-3200-0325 is the main board only. None of the plug-in boards — CPU card, FSSB module, graphics card, FROM/SRAM memory, DRAM — are included.

These are separate components, each with their own part numbers.

When replacing this main board, the plug-in boards from the original system can typically be transferred to the replacement, provided they are undamaged.

If the plug-in boards were damaged in the event that failed the main board, they must be sourced separately.

Confirm the condition of each plug-in board before installing them on the new main board.

FAQ

Q1: The 18i-A standalone control will not boot. All LEDs on the main board are off. Where should the diagnosis start?

A main board with all LEDs off on power-up indicates no control power reaching the board. Check the control power supply — typically a 5V / 24V supply board within the standalone enclosure.

Verify that the power supply's input voltage is correct and that its output voltages are within specification.

A failed power supply board is far more common than a failed main PCB at power-up. If the power supply is confirmed good and LEDs remain off, the main board becomes the fault candidate.

Q2: The control powers up and displays the FANUC boot screen but will not proceed to normal operation. What is the usual cause?

Boot screen stall on 18i-A systems is typically a FROM or SRAM issue — either the FROM module cannot be read correctly, the FROM contents are corrupted, or the SRAM data (parameters) is invalid. Access the boot menu and check the FROM module status.

Attempt a FROM check from the boot screen. If the FROM fails verification, the FROM module requires attention before normal operation can resume.

Q3: Can plug-in boards from an 18i-B (Model B) system be used in the A16B-3200-0325 (Model A)?

No. Model A and Model B plug-in boards are not interchangeable. The connector definitions, board form factors, and in some cases the software versions differ between the two model generations.

Only use Model A compatible plug-in boards with the A16B-3200-0325 main board. Identify the Model A boards from the machine's original parts list or from the labels on the currently installed boards.

Q4: After replacing the A16B-3200-0325, do parameters automatically transfer from the plug-in boards?

Parameters are stored in the SRAM module — a plug-in board. If the SRAM module is undamaged and transferred to the new main board, the parameters it contains are available after the replacement.

The SRAM battery must be functional to have retained the data through any power-off periods during the repair.

Always verify parameters are correct and complete after any board replacement before returning the machine to production.

Q5: The machine runs the 18i-MA variant. Is the A16B-3200-0325 also suitable for the 18i-TA and 180i variants?

Yes. The A16B-3200-0325 is the main board for the Series 18i-A / 180i-A platform across its variants — 18i-MA, 18i-TA, 180i-MA, 180i-TA, and others within the Model A generation.

The variation between machining centre (MA) and turning centre (TA) sub-types is primarily in the software configuration and parameters, not in the main board hardware.

The board itself is common across the platform.
