Eight Axes, One Board

The A17B-3300-0500 is an 8-axis i Series servo control module for FANUC Series 16i, 18i, and 21i CNC systems. It plugs into the mainboard or Sub-CPU board and manages servo axis control for up to eight controlled axes via the FSSB — FANUC's Fiber-optic Serial Servo Bus.


Each axis the CNC controls requires a servo module that translates the NC's position and velocity commands into real-time digital signals for the servo amplifiers. The A17B-3300-0500 handles up to eight axes simultaneously — velocity command generation, position feedback processing, and error compensation — in a single plug-in card. It communicates with the servo amplifiers over fibre-optic FSSB cables, using the TOSHIBA T0DX283 optical connector on the board.


Within the A17B-3300 series, both 6-axis and 8-axis variants exist. The 6-axis modules (A17B-3300-0101, -0103) are separate part numbers. The A17B-3300-0500 is specific to the 8-axis configuration. Confirming the axis count required before ordering is essential — the modules are not interchangeable.


FSSB and the i Series Architecture

FSSB (Fiber-optic Serial Servo Bus) is FANUC's high-speed digital communication bus between the CNC and its servo amplifiers. It replaced the analogue command interface of earlier FANUC platforms with a serial fibre-optic link, enabling higher axis count, faster update rates, and improved noise immunity.


On the A17B-3300-0500, each FSSB chain can connect multiple servo amplifiers in series. The CNC sends position and velocity commands over the bus every cycle; the amplifiers return actual position and current data. The board holds no servo parameter data — all parameters reside in the CNC's SRAM memory.

Q1: The CNC shows servo alarm 360-363 (FSSB communication error) on multiple axes simultaneously. Is the A17B-3300-0500 the likely cause?

FSSB alarms on multiple axes simultaneously point to the servo module rather than individual amplifiers. First re-seat the A17B-3300-0500 in its slot and check all FSSB fibre-optic cable connections at the board's optical connector. If alarms persist after re-seating and cable checks, the board's FSSB transmitter circuit has failed.



Q2: The CNC is a Series 16i with 6 controlled axes. Can the A17B-3300-0500 (8-axis) replace the existing 6-axis module?

The 8-axis module can be fitted in a 6-axis CNC — the unused axis channels simply remain unassigned. The FSSB topology is configured by CNC parameters, not the physical axis count of the module. Confirm the board physically fits the slot and that the CNC's FSSB parameter settings are correct for the connected amplifier chain.



Q3: Does replacing the A17B-3300-0500 require any parameter changes to the CNC?

The servo module itself holds no parameters. All FSSB topology, axis assignment, and servo gain parameters reside on the CNC's SRAM. After a like-for-like module replacement, the CNC reads its parameters normally. If the FSSB topology has changed (different amplifier chain), the FSSB initialisation parameters must be updated accordingly.



Q4: The FSSB fibre-optic cable was found kinked near the board connector. Should the cable be replaced before testing the new servo module?

Yes. A kinked or damaged fibre attenuates the optical signal and can produce FSSB communication errors identical to a failed servo module. Always replace damaged FSSB cables before or simultaneously with the servo module — fitting a new module on a degraded cable may not resolve the alarm.



Q5: The board was removed from a decommissioned Series 18i machine. Can it be used in a Series 16i?

The A17B-3300-0500 is used across Series 16i, 18i, and 21i platforms. Physical compatibility exists. However, the receiving CNC's FSSB parameters and axis configuration must match the board's connection setup. The board itself does not carry machine-specific data, so axis parameter reconfiguration is not required for the board — but the CNC's FSSB parameters must correctly describe the amplifier topology attached to the new board.
