Part Number: A66L-6001-0023#L1R003
Manufacturer: FANUC Ltd. (Japan)
Product Type: Fibre Optic Cable — FSSB Optical Communication Cable
Length: 1 m (L1 suffix)
The A66L-6001-0023#L1R003 is FANUC's standard FSSB fibre optic cable — the physical optical link that connects the CNC control unit's servo module to the servo amplifier chain. Every position command and every encoder feedback signal on an FSSB-based FANUC CNC system travels over a cable of this type. Without an intact FSSB optical connection, the CNC cannot communicate with its servo amplifiers and the axes cannot move.
FSSB — the Fiber-optic Serial Servo Bus — replaced the earlier analogue servo command interface from the FANUC Series 15 generation onwards. The optical fibre medium eliminates electromagnetic interference from the drive's high-current switching circuits, which would corrupt electrical signals on a conventional cable. This is especially important in dense machine tool cabinets where servo amplifiers, spindle drives, and CNC control electronics share close proximity.
The cable connects between the optical output connector on the CNC's servo module (the A17B or A20B plug-in FSSB card) and the optical input connector on the first servo amplifier in the FSSB chain. Multiple amplifiers are linked in series — each amplifier's optical output connects to the next amplifier's optical input using additional cables of the same or different lengths.
In FANUC's A66L cable nomenclature, the suffix after the # symbol encodes the cable specification. "L1" denotes the 1-metre length. "R003" identifies the round connector format — the standard circular plastic optical fibre connector used on FANUC i-Series servo modules and Alpha-series amplifiers. Alternative lengths in the same cable family (L05 = 0.5m, L2 = 2m, L3 = 3m) use the same R003 connector format and serve the same FSSB application.

Q1: The CNC shows FSSB alarm 360 or 361 on one or more axes after a cabinet maintenance. Could the cable be the cause?
FSSB alarms after maintenance are frequently caused by fibre optic cables that were disconnected and reconnected with contaminated or misaligned end faces. Remove the cable connectors, inspect the end faces for dust or fingerprints, clean with a dry fibre cleaning tool, and reconnect firmly. If the alarm clears, contamination was the cause. If the alarm persists, test with a known-good cable.
Q2: The machine only needs 0.5m of cable between the CNC module and the first amplifier. Can the 1m L1R003 be used?
Yes. A longer cable than strictly necessary is always acceptable — excess cable can be coiled with a minimum bend radius of approximately 30mm. Never kink, crush, or tightly bundle FANUC fibre optic cables. Physical damage to the fibre is the most common cause of FSSB cable failure in service.
Q3: What causes FSSB cable failure in service?
The most common causes are physical damage (sharp bending, pinching under cable clamps, crushing by cabinet doors), connector end face contamination from dust or oil, and UV degradation of the plastic outer jacket over many years. Plastic optical fibre also becomes brittle with age — cables that have been installed for over a decade may develop micro-cracks at connector entry points from routine thermal cycling.
Q4: Can FANUC fibre optic cables be tested without a dedicated fibre optic power meter?
The simplest functional test is visual: shine a bright LED torch into one end of the cable and check that light exits from the other end. A complete break in the fibre shows no transmitted light. However, this test cannot detect partial signal attenuation — a cable that transmits some light may still cause intermittent FSSB errors if attenuation is high. A dedicated fibre optic power meter gives a quantitative pass/fail measurement.
Q5: Is the A66L-6001-0023#L1R003 interchangeable with third-party FSSB cables?
FANUC FSSB cables use standard plastic optical fibre with FANUC-specific connector housings. Third-party replacement cables with compatible connector dimensions and equivalent fibre specifications are available from specialist FANUC parts suppliers. Confirm connector compatibility and fibre core diameter before fitting a non-FANUC cable in a production machine.
