Model: aiPS 55

Overview

The FANUC A06B-6110-H055 is the 65 kW power supply module in FANUC's Alpha i series drive system — the common DC bus power supply that energises a rack of servo and spindle amplifier modules.

Every axis on a FANUC Alpha i drive system ultimately draws its motoring power and returns its regenerated braking energy through this single module. The aiPS 55 is the largest standard unit in FANUC's 200-volt-class Alpha i power supply range, rated for the heaviest machine tool applications: large machining centres, multi-axis turning centres, and other high-axis-count machines with demanding simultaneous-axis duty.

FANUC's Alpha i series represented a significant evolution over the earlier Alpha series drives.

The Alpha i system integrated bus voltage monitoring, fault diagnostics, and communication with the CNC controller directly into the drive modules — the power supply module communicates its status to the CNC in real time, enabling the controller to respond to drive system events rather than simply detecting them after the fact.

The aiPS designation (Alpha i Power Supply) is the naming convention for this generation, distinct from the earlier PSM (Power Supply Module) designation of the original Alpha series.

The A06B-6110-H055 delivers regulated DC bus voltage to all servo amplifier modules (SVM) and spindle amplifier modules (SPM) connected to the same DC bus link.

The regenerative function is integral — when servo axes decelerate or the spindle brakes, the kinetic energy converted to electrical energy by the motors is actively returned to the AC supply rather than dissipated as heat.

In machines with frequent acceleration and deceleration cycles, this regeneration reduces energy consumption and eliminates the thermal load of resistive braking.

The DC Bus Architecture

In a FANUC Alpha i drive system, the power supply module is the only point of connection to the main AC power supply.

It rectifies the three-phase AC input to a regulated DC bus voltage. This DC bus then connects directly to all the servo and spindle amplifier modules installed in the same drive cabinet.

The individual SVM and SPM amplifier modules draw from this shared DC bus to power their respective motors.

Because the DC bus is shared, the energy budget of the entire drive system is managed centrally.

When several axes decelerate simultaneously, the combined regenerated energy feeds back onto the DC bus.

The aiPS 55 uses its active front-end (regenerative) circuit to transfer this energy back to the three-phase AC supply — a process that is electrically clean and does not require external resistors or braking units for normal duty cycles.

This architecture also means that the power supply module's rating must cover the peak simultaneous power demand of all connected amplifier modules.

The 65 kW rating of the A06B-6110-H055 makes it appropriate for installations where the sum of all connected motor power during the maximum simultaneous acceleration demand approaches this figure.

System sizing should account for the duty cycle and the overlap between acceleration and deceleration events across all axes.

Alpha i Series Drive System Context

The A06B-6110-H055 is part of the A06B-6110 family — FANUC's 200-volt-class Alpha i power supply modules.

The naming pattern within this family follows a straightforward power-step sequence:

  • aiPS 15 (A06B-6110-H015) — lighter-duty installations
  • aiPS 26 (A06B-6110-H026) — mid-range
  • aiPS 30 (A06B-6110-H030) — common multi-axis machining centre
  • aiPS 45 (A06B-6110-H045) — higher-power applications
  • aiPS 55 (A06B-6110-H055) — the A06B-6110 series maximum, for largest machines

The A06B-6110-H055 occupies the top of the 200-volt class within this family.

Machines that require more power or a 400-volt AC input use a different product family (A06B-6150 for the 400V Alpha i HV series).

System Integration

The aiPS 55 connects to the machine's three-phase main power through the input terminals.

The output DC bus connects via bus bar or cabling to the CX2A/CX2B connectors of the servo and spindle amplifier modules.

A magnetic contactor between the main power supply and the aiPS 55 input terminals provides the system's main power isolation under control of the CNC's main circuit on/off sequence.

The aiPS communicates with the CNC via the FANUC Alpha i series drive system communication link.

This link carries amplifier status, alarm codes, and monitoring data to the CNC, allowing the CNC to display drive system diagnostics on the operator panel and respond to drive-level faults in real time.

FAQ

Q1: The aiPS 55 is showing an LED alarm at startup. What is the most common cause of power supply alarms at initial power-up?

The most common causes are: an undervoltage condition on the three-phase input (measure input line-to-line voltages and confirm they are within 200–240V), a missing phase (confirm all three phases are present and balanced), an improperly wired DC bus connection to the amplifier modules (confirm all DC bus connectors are fully engaged), or a contactor sequence fault where the magnetic contactor has not closed correctly before the CNC commands the drive system ready state.

Check all three in sequence before suspecting a module fault.

Q2: Can the A06B-6110-H055 aiPS 55 be used in a 50 Hz power supply region?

Yes. The aiPS 55 accepts both 50 Hz and 60 Hz input. The input frequency specification of 50/60 Hz confirms dual-frequency compatibility. No modification or adjustment is required when the module operates on 50 Hz mains. The output DC bus voltage and the module's power handling capacity are equivalent at both frequencies.

Q3: The machine has an aiPS 45 installed but requires more power due to an added axis. Can the A06B-6110-H055 aiPS 55 replace it directly?

The A06B-6110-H055 is a plug-compatible replacement for any smaller aiPS module in the same 200-volt class (A06B-6110 series), provided the cabinet has sufficient space for the aiPS 55's physical dimensions and the power wiring is rated for the higher input current (228A at 200V).

No parameter changes are required in the CNC — the power supply module rating is transparent to the CNC's drive system configuration.

Confirm the installation dimensions and input wiring ratings before proceeding.

Q4: What happens if the aiPS 55 is undersized relative to the total motor load on the system?

An undersized power supply module cannot maintain stable DC bus voltage under peak acceleration demand. The DC bus voltage drops below the minimum acceptable level, which triggers an undervoltage alarm in the amplifier modules and causes the CNC to fault out.

In chronic undersizing situations, the machine trips repeatedly during aggressive acceleration sequences but runs normally during lighter duty.

The solution is to size the power supply module to the actual peak simultaneous power demand, including a margin for duty cycle variation.

Q5: Is a separate regenerative discharge unit required with the A06B-6110-H055?

No. The aiPS 55 is an active regenerative type — it returns braking energy directly to the AC supply without requiring an external discharge resistor or regenerative unit for normal duty cycles.

An external regenerative discharge unit is only considered when the regenerated energy during emergency stop or other extreme braking events exceeds the aiPS module's regeneration capacity.

For standard machine tool applications within the module's rated power, no additional discharge components are needed.
