Part Number: 6SL3040-0MA00-0AA1
Internal Ref (A5E): A5E01133848
Manufacturer: Siemens AG (Germany)
Product Type: SINAMICS S120 Control Unit CU320 (without CompactFlash Card)
The 6SL3040-0MA00-0AA1 is the CU320 Control Unit for the Siemens SINAMICS S120 drive system — the central processing module that runs all closed-loop control algorithms, manages DRIVE-CLiQ communications, and handles fieldbus connectivity across an S120 multi-axis drive lineup.
In SINAMICS S120 architecture, the CU320 is the brain of the system. It connects to Motor Modules, Active Line Modules, Sensor Modules, and Terminal Modules via DRIVE-CLiQ — Siemens' serial communication standard for drive component interconnection. The CU320 exchanges cyclic data with each connected module, runs the vector control and speed/torque algorithms, and communicates with the plant control system via its PROFIBUS DP interface.
This variant is supplied without a CompactFlash Card. The CF card stores the drive firmware and parameter set. For a functional drive, the CF card must be ordered separately and loaded with the correct firmware before commissioning.
The CU320 was discontinued in 2014. Its successor is the CU320-2, which offers the same core functionality with PROFINET support added alongside PROFIBUS.

DRIVE-CLiQ is Siemens' internal drive communication standard — a serial interface that carries both cyclic control data and electronic nameplate information. Every SINAMICS S120 component (Motor Modules, Line Modules, Sensor Modules) is identified to the CU320 via its DRIVE-CLiQ connection. The CU320 automatically reads each component's rating data and firmware version, enabling auto-parameterisation of the drive lineup.
The CU320's four DRIVE-CLiQ sockets support the connection of multiple Motor Modules and Line Modules in a single system, making it the practical controller for multi-axis S120 booksize and chassis drive configurations.
The 6SL3040-0MA00-0AA1 is supplied without the CompactFlash Card. The CF card is not optional — without it, the CU320 cannot start. The CF card stores the SINAMICS S120 firmware and the drive's complete parameter dataset. When replacing a CU320 in a running system, the original CF card from the failed unit can typically be transferred to the replacement CU320, restoring the drive's configuration without re-commissioning.
Q1: The CU320 is discontinued. Can the CU320-2 (6SL3040-1MA00-0AA0) replace it directly?
The CU320-2 is the designated successor and is functionally compatible with the same S120 Motor Modules and Line Modules. PROFIBUS DP is retained; PROFINET is added. The CF card from the original CU320 is transferable to the CU320-2. Confirm the SINAMICS firmware version on the CF card is compatible with the CU320-2 hardware before installation — some older firmware versions require updating for use on the newer CU.
Q2: The CU320 is replaced but the drive shows no DRIVE-CLiQ topology. What is the first step?
Verify the CF card is seated correctly in the new CU320. Without the CF card, the CU320 boots into a minimal state and cannot initialise DRIVE-CLiQ. If the CF card is present and seated, check each DRIVE-CLiQ cable connection — a single faulty cable breaks the topology enumeration. STARTER or SINAMICS Startdrive will show exactly which module has a communication fault.
Q3: A replacement CU320 is sourced without a CF card. What firmware and parameters need to be loaded?
The CF card must be loaded with SINAMICS S120 firmware matching the drive's original software version. Parameters must be re-entered from a backup — either a STARTER project file or a parameter clone saved to a separate CF card. If no backup exists, the drive requires full recommissioning including motor data entry and control loop tuning.
Q4: The CU320 supply voltage is 24V DC. Is an external 24V supply required, or is it derived internally?
An external 24V DC power supply is required. The CU320 does not derive its control supply from the drive's DC bus. In most SINAMICS S120 systems, a dedicated 24V power supply unit (SITOP or similar) provides the control voltage. This external supply keeps the CU320 powered for diagnostics even when the drive's AC mains supply is isolated.
Q5: The original CU320 has failed. The CF card appears undamaged. Is the CF card data intact?
The CF card is electrically independent of the CU320's failure mode in most fault scenarios. A CU320 that failed due to a power supply or processor fault typically leaves the CF card data intact. Remove the CF card carefully and inspect it visually. Insert it into the replacement CU320. If the drive powers up normally and reads its parameters, the CF card data has survived. If the drive shows configuration errors, a firmware re-flash or parameter re-load may be required.
