Part Number: A02B-0283-B801
Manufacturer: FANUC Ltd. (Japan)
Product Type: CNC Basic Unit — 1-Slot Stand-Alone
CNC Series: Series 18 / 180 / 180i-SB (18i-MB)
The A02B-0283-B801 is the 1-slot stand-alone basic unit for the FANUC Series 18i-MB CNC. It houses the main CPU board, FROM/SRAM memory, and one option slot. In the stand-alone configuration, the display unit mounts separately and connects by cable — distinct from the LCD-integrated type where electronics sit behind the screen.
Critical note: This is hardware only. The FROM memory is blank or non-specific. CNC system software, option licences, and machine parameters must all be loaded by the customer before the machine can run.
The Series 18i-MB is FANUC's two-path mill/boring mill CNC, supporting up to 4 controlled axes per path with direct integration to FANUC alpha servo systems.

Before operating, the customer must load via BOOT screen:
No software is pre-installed. The BOOT screen guides the loading process using a PCMCIA or CF card.
Q1: The unit is installed but the display is blank after power-up. No software has been loaded yet — is this normal?
Yes. Without software, the CNC boots to a blank screen or BOOT prompt. Use FANUC's BOOT screen procedure to load the system software from a compatible memory card.
Q2: The original machine used a 2-slot basic unit. Can this 1-slot unit replace it?
Only if the machine requires just one option board. If two option boards are fitted in the original, a 2-slot basic unit is required — otherwise a machine function will be lost.
Q3: There is no parameter backup. How should recommissioning be approached?
Collect all available MTB documentation, spec sheets, and maintenance logs. Use FANUC's Series 18i-MB parameter manual to identify each parameter. Recommission with axes uncoupled until baseline parameters are verified safe. Allow several days.
Q4: Can this basic unit from a milling machine replace the unit in a different 18i-MB boring mill?
The hardware is compatible. However, software version, option configuration, and machine parameters must exactly match the target machine. Never operate a machine with parameters from a different machine — it is unsafe.
Q5: The main CPU board has failed. Is component-level repair possible?
Specialist FANUC repair companies can repair connector damage, failed surface-mount components, and power supply faults. However, proprietary FANUC ASICs cannot be commercially sourced — if the CPU ASIC is the fault, an exchange unit is the only viable path.
