The CPU 1212C is Siemens's mid-entry compact controller in the S7-1200 family. The DC/DC/DC designation defines the full electrical profile: 24V DC supply, 24V DC digital inputs, 24V DC transistor digital outputs — the standard configuration for modern 24V control panels. Eight digital inputs, six transistor outputs, and two 0–10V analogue inputs are integrated into the CPU housing. No separate signal modules required for small to medium applications.
The transistor DO is significant: unlike relay outputs, transistor outputs switch DC loads without contact bounce, operate at significantly higher cycle rates, and have no mechanical wear limit. For outputs driving proximity sensor resets, fast-acting solenoid valves, or solid-state relays, transistor outputs are the appropriate choice — the relay output variants (DC/DC/RLY) exist for applications that need galvanic isolation or AC load switching.
An integrated PROFINET port (1 × RJ45) allows the CPU 1212C to connect to ET 200 distributed I/O stations, PROFINET-capable drives and devices, and HMI panels over Ethernet — without a separate communications processor. Programming, HMI communication, and field device communication all share the same Ethernet connection.

Compact machine control: Packaging equipment, filling machines, and small conveyor systems where the entire control logic fits within one CPU housing, with sensor inputs and actuator outputs connecting directly to the CPU's onboard terminals.
Process monitoring with analogue inputs: The two 0–10V analogue inputs read pressure, flow, or level transmitters directly — sufficient for simple single-variable process monitoring without adding an analogue signal module.
Panel replacement and lifecycle support: The CPU 1212C with FW V4.7 is TIA Portal V20+ compatible — a current-generation platform for both new designs and upgrades from earlier S7-200 or compact S7-300 installations.
Small HVAC and building automation: Fan speed control via PROFINET-connected drive, damper position monitoring via analogue input, sequence control via digital I/O — all from one compact DIN rail unit.
Q1: What is the difference between DC/DC/DC and DC/DC/RLY versions?
DC/DC/DC provides transistor (solid-state) digital outputs switching 24V DC loads. DC/DC/RLY provides relay contact outputs switching both AC and DC loads. Choose DC/DC/DC for fast-switching DC loads without mechanical wear; choose DC/DC/RLY when outputs need to switch AC loads or when load isolation from the PLC supply is required.
Q2: Can additional I/O modules be added to the CPU 1212C?
Yes. Signal boards (SB) plug directly into the CPU front and add 1 channel of DI, DO, AI, or AO. Signal modules (SM) connect to the CPU's right-side expansion bus. The CPU 1212C supports 2 SM expansion modules and 1 SB. For more than 2 SMs, the CPU 1214C or 1215C is required.
Q3: Is a Micro Memory Card required like the S7-300 CPUs?
No. The CPU 1212C has integrated Flash memory — programme storage does not require an external memory card. An optional SIMATIC Memory Card can be used for project backup, firmware updates, and programme transfer between CPUs, but it is not required for normal operation.
Q4: What engineering software is required?
TIA Portal with the STEP 7 Basic or STEP 7 Professional package at V20 or higher. The older STEP 7 Classic (S7-300/400 era software) does not support S7-1200 CPUs.
Q5: Where is the 6ES7212-1AE40-0XB0 sourced?
As an active Siemens product, through Siemens Industry Mall, authorised Siemens distributors, and the broad S7-1200 supply chain. The CPU 1212C is one of Siemens's most widely stocked S7-1200 models.
